Play Googolopoly, the internet board game

With such a high quantity of real and rumored products and acquisitions announcements, Google obviously gets a lot of attention in our animated discussions. In the last few months, Google Health, AppEngine, Knol, Android, OpenSocial, Sites, and the rumored Skype acquisition (is that even real or just propaganda?) were some of the most talked-about topics. We often come to the conclusion that Google’s way to do business with other companies and interest in controling the information age makes the company look more and more like the software monopoly of yesteryears. Overall, it’s questionable whether such a powerful position made the world better or worse…

Google's web indexing architecture targeted by patent lawsuit

Google is being sued by both Jarg Corp. (a privately funded search technology developer) and Northeastern University, parties to a patent which they claim describes the database technology Google uses to quickly index web information.

The Boston Globe reports that the patent in question (No. 5,694,593, dated Dec 2, 1997) was granted to Northeastern in 1997 and exclusively licensed to the aforementioned Jarg Corp. It's not clear when Google began allegedly infringing on the '593 patent.

Chinese firm suing Google over name confusion

A Chinese company is suing Google Inc's China subsidiary for copying its name, saying the US search engine's registered Chinese name is too similar to its own and has harmed its operations.

A spokesman for Beijing Guge Science and Technology said Google's commercial name had led to the company being constantly disturbed by people calling up its office trying to contact the search engine.

"We just want Google to change their commercial name," Tian Yunshan, a company official, said today.

"We have already passed our demands on to Google ... We will see what happens in court."

The search engine's Chinese name – a transliteration of the English word "Google" – was also used in Beijing Guge's commercially registered name, Mr Tian said.

New Google Sidebar and Gadgets for Google Desktop 5

Google has been ramping up development to make your desktop more functional with the release of Google Desktop 5. The team at Google have been busy working on ways to pipe more information through Google gadgets and sidebar elements on desktops.

The biggest noticeable changes are in the gadgets and sidebar elements. They now provide more visually appealing content that is easier to read. Google Desktop shows previews of search results in browsers instead of making users wait for another application to open. On a security note, Google Desktop will also give warnings when users are accessing links from documents, IM's, emails or browsing the web, notifying when sites might be trying to steal your personal information, or trying to install malicious software. Looks wise, the new sidebar samples the color of your desktop wallpaper and blends in so that it's not distractingly sitting out in the open which makes it easier to distinguish between gadgets for faster perusal of information.
