Calling some of these “martial arts” could be considered a stretch, but I am counting it if someone attempts to chop, kick, or headbutt something and Fails. Don’t get into semantics here folks. Just enjoy the stupidity…
i have jiu jitsu expertise. i had experience training with the gracies, but i only did that a few months (didn’t dig it). i’ve also done wing chun (my teacher’s teacher was the son of bruce lee’s teacher) for a bit, but didn’t dig that much either. now chinese kenpo, on the other hand, i did dig, and so i studied that for fifteen years. and yep, black belt, former instructor, lots of competitions, lots of trophies. i also have another black belt, in tae kwon do (from the guy who bruce lee studied TKD under). i also put about 10 years in studying filipino stick and knife fighting and about 2 yrs studying okinawan weapons (staff, tonfa, sword).
Hey, I did judo. I didn’t like it. At one time I had to choose between judo and football (the not-american kind of football) and that choice was not hard. I still play football, whenever I can. But it comes as a real shock WTF isn’t the next Bruce Lee. Too bad….
i’m way too old to be the next bruce lee, but it really is true that i’m “related” to him through what they call “lineage.” in martial arts it’s a big deal who your teacher was, and who he trained under, and who your teacher’s teacher trained under, etc. it’s supposed to be important for the legitimacy of your rank (for people who care about that stuff). i really did study wing chun kung fu (bruce lee’s original style) from a guy who learned it from the son of bruce lee’s teacher yip man. i didn’t do it for long enough to get any rank, or to really even learn very much, but it’s still kinda cool to have that tenuous connection. it doesn’t really mean anything, but it’s fun to talk about.
and i have another one too— when i lived in DC i got a black belt in tae kwon do from a guy named jhoon rhee, who was friends with bruce lee and taught him all the TKD kicking techniques. of course, this was 20 yrs after bruce lee died, so it’s not like there was ever any REAL connection. just a lineage thing, and something fun to talk about, like with the wing chun thing.
and anyway, being connected through lineage to bruce lee is TRIVIAL compared to being connected to… ELVIS! it’s true— i studied kenpo under a guy who learned it from two brothers who learned it from the same guy who taught elvis presley all those killer moves he used to do on stage in his vegas days. and all those old school kenpo guys have HUGE bellies, so i’ve always suspected that elvis learning kenpo was part of the reason he got so fat later in life (the deep-fried peanut butter and bacon sandwiches could have had something to do with it too, i suppose).
(but you can see that the whole “lineage” silliness is basically just a martial arts version of “six degrees of kevin bacon.” i’ve never put any stock in it at all.)
and attu, judo is just a sport version of jiu-jitsu and isn’t considered a “real” martial art (although it’s still cool). if you studied a “real” fighting style, you might dig it even more that football. you’re lucky to live in europe, because there are a lot of schools there teaching cool cutting edge fighting systems like KFM, that bad-ass style christian bale learned for the batman movies. it’s actually based on concepts from bruce lee’s jeet kune do. you should see if there’s a KFM school near you and check it out. i don’t really know too much about that style, but i do know it was developed by some JKD guys who trained under dan inosanto, who’s a totally awesome teacher in southern california (and who played one of the bad guys in “game of death”).
and what do you guys do about asshats who post comments under other people’s names? nothing? because maybe i’ll start doing that too…
wtf

posting under my name now, huh MrB? that’s exactly the kind of nutless behavior i’d expect from a wingnut, so no, i’m not surprised.
